The history of flight

Amelia Earhart's favorite thing to do was fly. She loved the way she felt as the plane would rise  higher and higher. But how did it all start? What's the history of flight?

Throughout the years people have been trying to figure out how to fly like the birds. There were myths about people flying and their was one about a king who captured a pegasus and another one about Icarus making wings of wax and feathers and he flew too high and got to close to the sun and his wings melted causing him to fall. People started thinking of ways to fly themselves after the kite was created in 400 B.C in China. After that people would attach feathers or wood planks to their arms, they would jump and flap their arms trying to fly. This didn't end so well many people got hurt because we are not built like birds their bones are hollow and light. Humans muscles are different than birds also.

Leonardo Di Vinci studied flying and what causes things to fly. He created the flying machine but he never created it. The flying machine was a new way people would try to fly. Many people tried creating it but it all failed.

One day we got hope that we could fly. The Wright brothers created a glider and tested out the different shapes that would be able to fly. After several tries they finally built a
plane. Once it it was created they tested it out and on December 17 1903, Orville Wright   piloted the plane as it lifted from the ground. The plane travelled one hundred and twenty feet.(NASA.gov)

After this moment people started to create different kinds of planes. Like ones that could carry people to different places and some to carry cargo.

Amelia's favorite dish

In this post I'm going to share with you how to make fried chicken and biscuits. In an article I read it said that fried chicken and biscuits was Amelia's favorite food and her mother always made it for her.
Somareview.com

What you'll need:

1 1/2 cups of buttermilk
3 pounds of chicken
2 tablespoons of chopped fresh parsley
2 1/2 cups of flour
1 teaspoon of dried oregano leaves
1 teaspoon of salt
1/2 teaspoons of pepper
1/2 teaspoons of baking soda
A teaspoon of salt
1/4 cup of shortening
1/4 cup of chicken broth
1/4 cup of butter
2 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder
1 tablespoon of sugar

Find a bowl and place the chicken in it. Marinate for 30-60 minutes after pouring the buttermilk on the chicken. Mix 1 cup of flour, parsley, oregano, salt and pepper in a separate bowl. 3/4 of buttermilk is to be poured into a casserole dish. Make sure to set aside any extra flour and buttermilk.

Over medium high heat melt the shortening plus the butter in a skillet. Add the chicken fry for 6-8 minutes till brown. Put the buttermilk in a casserole dish then place chicken on top.

Have a measuring cup equal to 1/3 and strain the fat from the skillet, to put it into the cup. Add butter if their isn't enough fat. Scrape the brownings off the skillet and add broth. Pour the broth all over the chicken. Bake for 1 hour at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Recipe

Mix the remaining flour with sugar, baking soda and the baking powder. Add remaining buttermilk and 1/3 cup of fat to make the dough nice and soft. Use a rolling pin to flatten the dough out then cut the dough into 2" rounds. Do this while the chicken is in the oven.

Have an ungreased cookie sheet and place the biscuits on the sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes.

Amelia's plane found?

Off the coast of Nikumaroo Island forensic imagining specialists found a wheel and other landing gear. Amelia Earhart's plane was said to have went down close to Nikamaroo Island in 1937.

"We don't know wether it's her plane, but what we have is a debris field in a place where there should be a debris field. If what we had put together based on the evidence that we had is correct." Said Ric Gillespie, executive director of The International Group for Historic Recovery.(Abcnews.com)

When Gillespie was on the expedition to find Amelia's plane he said he was bummed because he didn't see anything in the coral reef from the video camera. They used a high definition camera but it couldn't be viewed in real time, so they sent it to a forensic analyst. On Tuesday he got a call and the forensic analyst said there's stuff here, it looks man made.

The last thing that Amelia said over the radio was that she was on the line 157337, which is the two Islands near Howland Island. Expeditions in the past they had found freckle cream and lotion. Which woman in the 1930s would have bought. They think it could have belonged to Amelia because it was found on the coast of Nikumaroo Island and that's where they think she had landed.

First transatlantic flight

After the solo flight across the Atlantic by Charles Lindbergh, people started wanting a woman to fly across the Atlantic. So the first time Amelia flew was only as a passenger, she got a phone call one day. At first She wasn't going to take the phone call at first because work was so busy and she was thinking it really wasn't that important at all but after being informed by one of her co workers  that it was really important she took it and her life changed. The phone call was  from Captain Riley  asking if she would like to be the first woman to fly the Atlantic, and of course she said yes.

She had to travel to New York and go through several interviews and meet with project coordinators because that needed to find out if she was going to be good enough to fly. She also meet with George Putnam a publisher and her future husband. He wanted to meet with her because he wanted to publish her book shes going to write about her life and this trip. She got a phone call one day and they said she was selected to be the first woman across the Atlantic. But she could only go as a passenger since its very dangerous to fly solo across the Atlantic.

They took off from Newfoundland on a plane called friendship on June 27, 1928. The pilot was Wilmer Shultz and the copilot was Louis Gordon and he accompanied Amelia on the transatlantic flight. This trip took exactly 20 hours and 40 minutes . They landed at Bury Point, Wales. Due to weather conditions Wilmer Shultz did all the flying and even though Amelia also agreed with this she said she she " was just baggage, like a sack of potatoes.....maybe someday Ill try it alone" she added.(biography.com)

Amelia Earhart

Amelia Earhart was born in Atchison, Kansas on July 24 1897. She's the daughter of a railroad attorney and spent most of her childhood in many towns. As a young girl Amelia was always braver than most girls and she was more of a tomboy. She climbed trees and hunted rats, she also kept a scrapbook of successful woman in male oriented fields.

After she graduated high school in 1915, Amelia attended a girls finishing school in Philadelphia. She left during her second year to work as a nurses aid in World War 1. She then attended college and became a social worker in Boston. Amelia took her first flying lesson on january 3,1921 and she decide she wanted to fly. She bought her first plane with the help of her mother and sister. She named her plane canary and used the plane to set her first woman's record by rising to an altitude of 14,000 feet.

On one afternoon in April she got a phone call that would change her life. At first she wasn't going to answer but after deciding it was an important call she took it. "How would you like to be the first woman to fly solo across the ocean?" said the man. She replied "Yes". On June 17 1928, Amelia  arrived at Bury Point , Wales and 21 hours later, the flight made headlines. In 1931 Amelia married George Putnam, they met when he published one of her books 20 hours-40 minutes. In June 1937, she attempted to be the first woman to fly around the world but she never made it, Amelia Earhart vanished on July 2, 1937.

I chose to do this blog on Amelia because she is a great role model. I like that shes brave and doesn't give up if she fails at something. The first time she attempted to fly across the Atlantic ocean she didn't make it because her plane broke down. But a few months later she tried again and made it. Her story always interested me and I always wanted to learn more about her and how she went missing.

I will be writing about what her life was like and hopefully find out something about the reasons she vanished.
